Sir Simon has been a member of Devon & Cornwall Police Authority since its inception in 1965 and is a former Chairman. He has served on the Home Office Police Advisory Board and the national Police Negotiating Board, and is a former Chairman of the Police Committee of the Association of County Councils.
A former Leader and Chairman of Devon County Council, Sir Simon is also a former Conservative Leader of the Association of County Councils and High Sheriff of Devon. Since 1993 he has represented the South West as a full member of the Committee of the Regions of the European Union and has a particular interest in sustainable development in agriculture and fisheries.
Sir Simon lives and farms in the South Hams.
