Who We Are

Devon and Cornwall Police Authority has 19 Members. The Members are supported by paid employees - the police authority officers. The Police Authority aims to have a membership that best reflects the diversity of the communities its serves. For information about current Member or officer vacancies please select here.

Police Authority Members

The 19 Members of the Authority comprise 10 Councillors and 9 Independents (1 of whom must be a Lay Justice).

A joint committee representing all of these councils determines the political composition of the appointments to reflect the overall political balance across the councils’ membership.

The Independent Members are appointed after responding to an advert, completing an application form and going through a rigorous selection process. Their term of office is 4 years but they can re-apply to serve for a further 4 year period. Much of the recruitment process for independent members is governed by legislation and applicants must be over 18 and live or work in Devon, Cornwall or the Isles of Scilly.

The Authority has a Members Allowances Scheme. The aim of the scheme is to ensure that being a member of the Authority is not a financial burden on any individual. To see details of the allowance scheme please select here

All Members have to sign that they agree to abide by a Code of Conduct. To see a copy of the code of conduct select here. Each Member is required to complete a Register of Interests form and submit details if they accept, in their role as a Member,  gifts or hospitality  worth more than £25.00. Copies of the register of interest forms and any declarations of the receipt of gifts and hospitality are posted on this website in the profile for each member. Police Authority Officers

The Officers of the Authority are paid employees who are under the direct control of the Chief Executive. The Officers support Members by ensuring that decisions are implemented, that monitoring is undertaken and by providing all  the administrative support that would be expected in a dynamic organisation
