Constitution
The Police Authority has agreed a Constitution which sets out how the Authority operates, how decisions are made and the procedures which are followed to ensure the provision of an effective and efficient police service and to be accountable to local people.
Some of these processes are prescribed by the law, others are matters for the Police Authority’s discretion. The Appendices to the Constitution contain a number of documents that relate to the business of the Authority.
Oversight and monitoring of the Constitution is undertaken by the Authority’s Corporate Governance Committee based on any specific recommendations submitted by the Monitoring Officer. Other than routine updating, such as the inclusion of a revised appendix, changes to the Constitution have to be agreed by the Police Authority in a formal meeting.
