The Police Authority

Mike Bull The Chairman

The Chairman

Welcome to the Police Authority website.  I hope that you find it useful.  May I say now that if, having used the site, you have ideas about how we could improve it please do not hesitate to let us know.  We welcome constructive suggestions.

The job of the Police Authority includes seeking to progressively improve the quality of the police service provided for the residents of Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and for visitors to our delightful area.  We work with the Chief Constable and the Force to achieve this objective.  We also have to set a budget for policing services and with the impact of the current economic recession that is becoming ever more challenging.  However, despite that fact, the Force has managed to get 200 more police officers out of back office jobs to the "front line" and we hope you are seeing increasing evidence of their positive work in your community.

The Authority is also a vital link between the people and communities across the Force area and the Constabulary.  The 19 Members of the Authority (10 councillors and 9 independent members) work with the Chief Constable and set objectives for the Force to deliver.  In undertaking such tasks the Authority seeks to find out what the people who live and work in the area want to see done.  It is, though, the Chief Constable who then has overall operational responsibility for the day to day delivery of effective policing.

If you want to contribute to the debate about what is important in policing terms and what our priorities should be, please take each opportunity to tell us your views.  We want to serve communities well and achieve high quality services, and establish strong confidence and satisfaction levels in the work of our police.
